ABOUT ME

WRITER, SEEKER

I guess you could say my love of art is in my blood or in my proverbial “DNA.”  But the truth is that I grew up surrounded by art.  What I could not fully comprehend as a child, but would later come to learn, is that my love and fascination with art really does run in my blood and is really part of my DNA.  You see, the art I was surrounded by was painted by my great grandmother.

Both my mother and father loved and appreciated her talent and her art which she was quick to share.  Before my grandfather’s death, my parents gathered all that remained, or so we thought remained, of the paintings that were in my grandfather’s possession in an effort to preserve them.  I was just a young girl then.  They brought all the paintings home where they were stored in the “long dark closet” in the basement of our home.  A scary place to go for me as it was yes dark, but more importantly filled with spiders and cave crickets.  But as a child, my fascination and intrigue drew me in to the long dark closet where I would explore the wonders of these old paintings.

For many years to follow, I grew in my knowledge and discernment about her work, but really still did not know much about her and this aspect of her life.  I knew that she was a painter and that was about it.  But my desire to know more about her and this interesting part of my family history began with a quote in an article written about her.  This quote was the catalyst for what I now call my great journey of discovery.  This quote takes my DNA back six generations to my great, great, great, great aunt whose work allegedly hung in the National Gallery Museum in London, England.  This quote demanded of me to learn more.

This blog is about my journey of discovery to find out more about my great grandmother Nona Hodge and my families’ legacy of great women artist.  Welcome to Finding Nona….
